Know Your Rights
A great many pickpockets in cities such as Barcelona go for a more skilled
and subtle method, such as impersonating officers of the law. Before you travel,
make yourself familiar with the basic laws of the country and city, ensuring
that you are clear on whether or not the policemen there have the right to search
your belongings. Often they will demand to see your bags, will rifle through
your money and take cash without you realising. In Barcelona, policemen are
not allowed to search your belongings in public, they are required to take you
to a police station first. Knowing this kind of information gives you the power
to put off impersonators and call for some real help.
Avoid quieter back-streets and ensure you are always in sight of members of
public. Be wary of suspicious substances offered by street sellers, often in
big cities there is a thriving drug trade - the real police will not be kind
on tourists found in possession of drugs, even if they have been bought in ignorance.
