Common Injuries: Water Sports
Many people on holiday overseas are involved in water sports at some time during
their stay. You should ensure your travel insurance covers all water sports
you plan to undertake. Make sure you:
- Buy travel insurance, which should cover
all water sports relevant to you.
- Check the safety of swimming pools. A lifeguard must be on duty at all times
during use.
- Identify safe swimming beaches. Check local tides and whether a coastguard
is present.
- Avoid swimming off contaminated beaches, in stagnant or polluted water.
- Never dive into water of unknown depth.
- Check water sports equipment for quality and safety features.
- Wear a life jacket for boating, water skiing and other offshore water sports.
- Do not sub-aqua dive within 24hrs of flying (either on arrival or before
departure).
- Wear plastic shoes on beaches to avoid infection and foot injury.
- Use a high factor sunscreen. Re-apply frequently after swimming or exercise.
- Avoid swimming after drinking alcohol.
